Jesus strongly advised against seeking signs. In Matthew 16:4, He said to the Pharisees and Sadducees,
4 An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign…
Jesus also taught in Luke 16:31,
31… ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be persuaded even if someone rises from the dead.’”
What’s Jesus saying? He’s teaching that we should not seek out religious experiences to take the place of faith. He’s teaching that we have everything we need within the pages of Holy Scripture.
What we have to realize when we desire a religious experience is that what we’re actually desiring is to no longer have to have faith.
Consider it. We’re called upon to have a greater faith than Moses. How so? There was a time in the life of Moses that his faith was similar to ours, but then one day, that changed. God spoke to Moses in a real, audible voice. His faith was no longer faith, as we know it. His faith became reality due to his experience.
Jesus taught that Moses and the Prophets, which is another way of saying God’s Word, is speaking today to those who will listen. And He goes as far to say that if you can not be convinced by God’s Word, then experiencing miracles won’t help you to believe.
I also don’t want you to think that I have no desire to have religious experiences. I have a very real desire to see miracles similar to the ones I read about in the Bible, but I also recognize that it is much more blessed to not see miracles, yet believe that every one I read about in Scripture has happened.
So don’t trust in feelings and don’t trust in experiences. But let our cry be the same as David in Psalm 9:10,
10…those who know Your name will put their trust in You, for You, O Lord, have not forsaken those who seek You.
Much Love!
