Every new year I like to go through the Bible to see how Bible verses correspond with the new year. For instance, this upcoming year is 2021, so I look at every book of the Bible that has a chapter “20” and a verse “21,” just to see what they say.
There’s nothing prophetic or mystical about it, but it’s fun. This year I thought we could look at the verses together and see what 20:21 has in store for us…
The following are the only books in the Bible with both a twentieth chapter and a twenty-first verse:
Exodus 20:21 – So the people stood at a distance, while Moses approached the thick cloud where God was. Yikes! Too familiar!
Leviticus 20:21 – If there is a man who takes his brother’s wife, it is abhorrent; he has uncovered his brother’s nakedness. They will be childless. Uh…no comment.
Numbers 20:21 – Thus Edom refused to allow Israel to pass through his territory; so Israel turned away from him. They will regret that decision.
Judges 20:21 – Then the sons of Benjamin came out of Gibeah and felled to the ground on that day 22,000 men of Israel. A nation divided; Also, too familiar!
1 Samuel 20:21 – And behold, I will send the lad, saying, ‘Go, find the arrows.’ If I specifically say to the lad, ‘Behold, the arrows are on this side of you, get them,’ then come; for there is safety for you and no harm, as the Lord lives. Jonathan protecting David safe from King Saul.
2 Samuel 20:21 – Such is not the case. But a man from the hill country of Ephraim, Sheba the son of Bichri by name, has lifted up his hand against King David. Only hand him over, and I will depart from the city.” And the woman said to Joab, “Behold, his head will be thrown to you over the wall.” Gruesome!
1 Kings 20:21 – The king of Israel went out and struck the horses and chariots, and killed the Arameans with a great slaughter. Even more gruesome!
2 Kings 20:21 – So Hezekiah slept with his fathers, and Manasseh his son became king in his place. Son replaces father as king.
2 Chronicles 20:21 – When he had consulted with the people, he appointed those who sang to the Lord and those who praised Him in holy attire, as they went out before the army and said, “Give thanks to the Lord, for His lovingkindness is everlasting.” Singers for the Lord go before the soldiers!
Job 20:21 – Nothing remains for him to devour, therefore his prosperity does not endure. Just sad.
Proverbs 20:21 – An inheritance gained hurriedly at the beginning will not be blessed in the end. Wise words.
Ezekiel 20:21 – But the children rebelled against Me; they did not walk in My statutes, nor were they careful to observe My ordinances, by which, if a man observes them, he will live; they profaned My sabbaths. So I resolved to pour out My wrath on them, to accomplish My anger against them in the wilderness. The consequences of rebellion.
Matthew 20:21 – And He said to her, “What do you wish?” She said to Him, “Command that in Your kingdom these two sons of mine may sit one on Your right and one on Your left.” Momma lobbying for her boys – not the first or the last!
Luke 20:21 – They questioned Him, saying, “Teacher, we know that You speak and teach correctly, and You are not partial to any, but teach the way of God in truth. False respect and deception.
John 20:21 – So Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you; as the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” A verse to apply to the new year!
Acts 20:21 – solemnly testifying to both Jews and Greeks of repentance toward God and faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. Testify to the gospel!
So, of the 66 books, only 16 have a twentieth chapter with a twenty-first verse. Like I said, nothing prophetic, but just a fun new year tradition.
What does 2021 have in store? God alone has the answers.
Happy New Year!
