Regarding Children

The Biblical teaching regarding children and our responsibilities to them is clear.  What are we doing to live out the Biblical teaching?

Here is a checklist of things to remember regarding children from the Bible:

One, remember that God makes children –

Psalm 139:13 – For You formed my inward parts; You wove me in my mother’s womb.

Two, remember that children are the gift of God –

Psalm 127:3 – Behold, children are a gift of the Lord, the fruit of the womb is a reward.

Three, remember that children are a blessing from God –

Psalm 127:4 – Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, so are the children of one’s youth.

Four, remember that children are given with the expectation that we will train them for the Lord –

Ephesians 6:4 – Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

Five, remember that children must be taught –

Deuteronomy 6:6-7 – These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart.  You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up.

Six, remember that we are to be the models for our children –

Deuteronomy 6:8-9 and 20-21 – You shall bind them as a sign on your hand and they shall be as frontals on your forehead. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates… “When your son asks you in time to come, saying, ‘What do the testimonies and the statutes and the judgments which the Lord our God commanded you?’  then you shall say to your son, ‘We were slaves to Pharaoh in Egypt, and the Lord brought us from Egypt with a mighty hand.

Seven, remember that we are to love our children like God loves us –

Luke 15:20 – So he got up and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion for him, and ran and embraced him and kissed him.

Eight, remember that we are to trust our children to God’s care –

Proverbs 22:6 – Train up a child in the way he should go, even when he is old he will not depart from it.

Everyone bears responsibility when it comes to children.  I didn’t think much about children until I had children of my own.  Now I see my children in ALL children.  And because of Jesus’ teaching, I now see all Christians as God’s children.  Let us be a people who see all things through the lens of the Bible.

Much Love!
