Teach to Grow
It’s very common to hear Bible teachers say something along the lines of, “When I teach, I learn more than anyone else.”
When we think about it, it makes sense. If someone attempts to teach us something, we may get it, or we may not. Most commonly, I think, we get part of it.
But to teach something, we must first grasp the subject ourself on some level.
This can be applied to all subjects, but I’ve found it to be especially gripping when the subject is a Biblical subject. As the Holy Spirit aides us in understanding, He also does a mysterious work of transformation.
For instance, I’ve learned that if I want to be more courageous, it is extremely beneficial to my own courage if I teach others to be courageous.
Studying the Bible in the pursuit of following Jesus in order to be more like Him, is different from anything else that we can ever pursue. There are many subjects that we can achieve mastery in, but I’ve yet to meet the person who has come anywhere close to being like Jesus.
However, I have known many brothers and sisters in Christ that have displayed many different qualities of Jesus. And even to imitate Jesus in only one way leaves a powerful impression and makes an eternal difference in this life.
In studying Acts chapter fourteen this week, it struck me that everything that the Apostle Paul taught to others was exactly what he needed to grasp the most in order to live out the high calling that the Lord Jesus called Him to.
Is there a character trait of Jesus that you would love to imitate? Teach someone else about it. You’ll be surprised how much you grow when you do.
Much love!
