The Impossible

When one sits down and tries to describe the Lord, there is immediately a great problem.  It cannot be done.

The Grand Canyon is magnificent and it cannot be described in words.  The Lord our God is far and wide and beyond the imagination more magnificent than The Grand Canyon.  How does one even begin?

The Lord can, and should only be described using the words the He used in Holy Scripture.  I’m not trying to limit our descriptions, but rather keep whatever descriptions we use to describe God consistent with what the Bible says. But even as wonderful as the scriptures are, the Lord through them gives us, like He gave Isaiah, nothing more than …the train of His robe… (Isaiah 6:1).

We also know God, as many others do, through personal experience, and even this can be tricky, as understanding the ways that God works in our lives has to be discerned very carefully.

Why am I on about all this?  Because this Sunday, I have to attempt the impossible.  I have to attempt to tell you who God is.

I must.  Our text is Proverbs 1:7, The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; Fools despise wisdom and instruction. Without understanding, on some level, who God is, the verse does us no good, and I intend for this verse to do us a great amount of good, as I believe the Lord intends the same.

I think you’ll find that in the examination of God, you will find yourself being examined by God in ways that can be very transformative.

May all of our changes be for the good and for His glory and for His honor.

Much love!
