The Origin of Finger Pointing

Mankind didn’t have to be in existence for very long before the finger started to point.  We can trace the origin of finger pointing all the way back to Genesis chapter 3.

Satan tricked Eve into believing a lie which caused her to lose trust in God and disobey His command to not eat of the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden.

It’s easy to overlook, but after Eve disobeyed, the scripture immediately says in Genesis 3:6 –

…and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate.

Adam was with her the whole time, yet said nothing and did not intervene in any way, but instead, participated.

When God confronted Adam and Eve about their disobedience, finger pointing was born.  In verse 12 of chapter 3, Adam says,

“The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me from the tree, and I ate.”

Adam doesn’t say the words, “It’s your fault,” but he definitely implies that had God not given him the woman, he would not have disobeyed.  He pointed the finger at God.

When God confronted Eve, she replied in verse 13,

“The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”

And for the second time in human history, the finger was pointed.

Was the finger pointing justified?  Partially.  What Adam and Eve both said was true, however, blaming others for our moral failures is never accepted by God.

But God does take all things into consideration when He considers our failures, that’s why Adam, Eve and Satan all received consequences, each for their own sin.

Let’s not be a people who point the finger at others as an excuse for our moral failures.  Do others play a part sometimes?  Sure they do, but God will not hold you responsible for anyone’s actions except your own.  And you will never be forgiven your sin by blaming others.

Better to confess your sin to God, ask for His forgiveness and then move forward in His grace.  God will comfort you when you do and, better yet, because of Jesus’ sacrifice, your sin will be forgiven.
