In Matthew 5:13 and 14, Jesus makes two definitive statements about who His followers are:
“You are the salt of the earth,” and, “You are the light of the world.”
I love definitive statements and especially when they come from Jesus.
I learned years ago in a marriage class that Kendall and I were taking together at our former church, that in marriages, definitive statements are seldom a good thing because they are seldom true. For example, we learned to not make definitive statements that began like this:
“You always…”
“You never…”
What’s wrong with beginning statements with the words always and never? They are always false and never true. Even that doesn’t sound true does it?
So much of the messes we find ourselves in are the result of false identity. We either believe something about ourselves that isn’t true or we are chasing and identity that we were never meant to have. Sometimes people help us to believe things about ourselves that aren’t true by making definitive statements that we buy into. Many times, we create our own false identities.
What’s to be done? Go to the Word. Listen to what Jesus says. Listen to who He says that you ARE.
Jesus is always right and never wrong. That is one of the only sentences I can compose using “always” and “never” that will ever be true!
Want to know who you are? Jesus says that YOU ARE salt and light. As we explore what that means in the next couple of sermons, I encourage everyone to embrace your true identity in Christ Jesus.
You are always on my heart and mind. I love and appreciate you very much!
