I’m not intentionally controversial. I don’t believe that God has called me to that. I don’t believe that He’s called anyone to that. I say this only because I know that what I’m about to write may be controversial or possibly offensive. I just wanted you to know that it is not my intention to offend, but simply to express what the Bible teaches. Here it is:
Worry is sin.
Many of you find no offense in this Biblical truth, but some may. The Bible says, in some form, “do not worry” 365 times – one for each day of the year.
I remember an argument I had one time with a person who accused me of not caring. I explained that I did care. The person argued that if I cared, I would be worried.
When she said those words to me a light bulb came on in my mind: People associate worry with caring. Does that hit home with you? It does with me. Shamefully, I worry about my children often. I worry they will get hurt. I worry I will mess them up somehow. I worry they will be sitting in a room with a therapist twenty years from now saying, “My dad really messed me up because…” or something like that.
I tell myself the lie that I worry because I care. It’s a lie. I don’t worry because I care. I worry because I have small faith. I worry because I don’t trust God to take care of my children.
I’m not saying that people shouldn’t be responsible parents. I’m saying that worry is not a part of responsibility.
That’s just one example, but worry can be applied to unlimited situations. In Philippians 4:6, the apostle Paul says, Be anxious for nothing…
In other words, don’t worry about ANYTHING. What a message in our world filled with worry and fear! How is this possible? We’ll discuss this in the sermon!
Let’s stop worrying together!
